Medea

Medea was a Greek play by Euripides. It was a tragic play. I’ll tell you why. It all began when Jason and the Argonauts came to get the golden fleece from this king. The king said that he could have it, but only if he did three nearly impossible tasks. The daughter of the king, Medea, tells Jason that she will help him with these tasks, but only if he takes her with him on his voyage back home. Jason agrees. With Medea’s help, Jason eventually gains the golden fleece and travels back home with Medea. When Jason eventually becomes king he grows tired of Medea and marries another. Medea is greatly enraged at this and tries to get revenge by killing Jason’s new family. Because of this she is banished. This is a very tragic play by Euripides.

The main reason for the Persian War was because of King Darius of Persia wanted to expand his empire. The first time Persia invaded Greece, began in 492 BC. That’s when the war started. Late into the war, the Persians suffered a great defeat at the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Plataea. Before that it seemed like the Persians would win the war, but Greece eventually won the war. Nobody knows what would have happened if the Persians won. The war is significant because the war ended with a Persian defeat in 490 BC.

The Peloponnesian War started with Sparta’s fear of Athens getting strong (because they were already a very strong nation) and overthrowing them. The war started in 431 BC beginning with Sparta starting a war with Athens. Sparta eventually won and then they became the strongest nation. Well, there were a few little wars between different nations competing for the strongest nation, but then they eventually became exhausted and they all gave up.

Aristotle was a great Greek philosopher and polymath and is known for being the one of the greatest philosophers to ever live. He is also famous for being the first genuine scientist in history. Aristotle was born 384 BC and died 322 BC. He was a student in Plato’s Academy for twenty years. He even founded his own school where he spent most of his life teaching, studying, and writing.

Sparta I would say is a city-state obsessed with war. You will soon see why. Spartan boys grew up until they were about seven years old. When they were seven then they were taken away for thirteen years to grow up to become soldiers. Once twenty years old they were allowed to get married, however, they could not see their wives and they had to live in barracks for the next ten years. When they were thirty years old then they could be a real citizen. The girls were left at home to learn to do cooking, cleaning, etc. The boys and girls at in different areas. Girls ate at home and the boys ate at public mess halls. The mess halls gave very gross and icky food. Some food even had blood in it! The Spartan’s were very unusual people.

Plato

Plato was an extraordinary philosopher who loved to gain wisdom and use it. He created an allegory called “The Allegory of the Cave”. we will be talking about it and also about philosopher kings.

According to Philosophyzer, The Allegory of the Cave is a theory that Plato created, concerning human perception. “Plato claimed that knowledge gained through the senses is no more than opinion and that, in order to have real knowledge, we must gain it through philosophical reasoning.” The point in this allegory is involved in the link above.

According to Wikipedia, a philosopher king is a ruler like a king or president or a mayor, anybody who is in power who loves wisdom who is smart, and has a willingness to live a simple life. So a philosopher king is anybody who is in some sort of power who loves wisdom.

Ancient Greece is very interesting. According to Google, “The Greeks made important contributions to philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. … The Greeks were known for their sophisticated sculpture and architecture. Greek culture influenced the Roman Empire and many other civilizations, and it continues to influence modern cultures today.” The Greeks were a lot smarter than we thought they were.

Pre-Socratic philosophy is also known as early Greek philosophy. They are very significant because of their thoughts and theories on how they thought the world worked. One philosopher actually thought that everything is made out of water. They are all very smart for people who lived a long time ago.
